Wooden Spoon
- 1 kg POTATOES
- 250 g CABBAGE
- 1 large ONION
- 50 g BUTTER
- 100 g CHEDDAR CHEESE
- 1 tsp SALT
- 1/2 tsp BLACK PEPPER
Peel your potatoes and cut them into small chunks. Place them into the large pot with water. Add a pinch of salt to the water now.
Bring the water to a boil on high heat. Cook the potatoes until they are very soft. This usually takes about fifteen to twenty minutes.
Drain the water and mash the potatoes well. Add a big knob of butter while mashing. Keep them warm while you prepare the vegetables.
Melt more butter in your large frying pan. Add the chopped onions and sliced cabbage together. Cook them until they are soft and tender.
Mix the cooked vegetables into the mashed potatoes. Stir them well so everything is evenly spread. Add salt and pepper to the mix now.
Transfer the mixture into your greased casserole dish. Spread it out flat with your wooden spoon. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.
Place the dish into a preheated oven. Bake at 400°F for about fifteen minutes. The cheese should be bubbly and golden brown.
- Mash potatoes while they are still very hot.
- Sauté onions until they are golden for extra sweetness.
- Use a high-quality butter for the richest flavor.
- Do not overcook the cabbage into a mushy mess.
- Add a splash of milk for creamier mashed potatoes.
- Grate your own cheese for a much better melt.
- Press the top with a fork for crunchy ridges.
- Let the dish sit for five minutes before serving.
