Equipment

  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • A sturdy baking sheet.
  • Clean kitchen towel
  • A sharp knife or bread lame.
  • Wire cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water.
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast.
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar.
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil.
  • 1 teaspoon salt.
  • 5 to 6 cups all-purpose flour.
  • 1 egg for the egg wash.

Instructions

  • Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let it sit for five minutes until it bubbles.
  • Stir in the oil and the salt. Slowly add the flour one cup at a time.
  • Knead the dough for about ten minutes. It should feel smooth and not too sticky.
  • Place dough in a greased bowl. Cover it and let it rise for one hour.
  • Punch the dough down. Divide it into two long loaf shapes.
  • Place loaves on a pan. Let them rise for thirty more minutes.
  • Brush with egg wash. Bake at 375°F for 20 to 25 minutes.

Notes

  • Use warm water, not hot water.
  • Fresh yeast makes the bread rise better.
  • Do not add too much flour at once.
  • Steam in the oven creates a crunchy crust.
  • Let the bread cool before you slice it.
