Equipment

  • 9-inch pie dish
  • Rolling Pin
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Sharp peeler
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Pastry cutter
  • Small bowl
  • Cooling rack

Ingredients

  • 2 and ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup cold butter cubed
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
  • 6 cups sliced Granny Smith apples
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter cut into small pieces

Instructions

  • Mix flour, salt, and sugar together. Cut in the cold butter until crumbly.
  • Add ice water slowly until dough forms. Divide dough into two equal portions.
  • Wrap each portion in plastic wrap tightly. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  • Peel and slice all the apples thinly. Combine apples with both sugars in bowl.
  • Add flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg to mixture. Pour lemon juice over the apples evenly. Toss everything together until well coated.
  • Roll out one dough portion for bottom. Place it in your pie dish carefully.
  • Add the apple filling on top evenly. Dot the filling with butter pieces throughout.
  • Roll out second dough for top crust. Cover the pie and seal the edges. Cut small slits on top for venting.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F first. Brush pie crust with egg wash lightly.
  • Bake for 50 to 55 minutes total. The crust should turn golden brown nicely. Let the pie cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • Use cold butter for flaky crust results.
  • Granny Smith apples work best for baking.
  • Don't skip the lemon juice ever.
  • It prevents apples from turning brown quickly.
  • Chill your dough properly before rolling out.
  • This prevents shrinking during the baking process.
  • Cover edges with foil if browning too fast.
  • Let pie cool for easier slicing later.
